Job Description

The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley is seeking a skilled and motivated Governance and Risk Coordinator to lead our governance and risk functions. This is your chance to work at the heart of a dynamic organisation, shaping the policies and frameworks that ensure transparency, accountability, and excellence in everything we do.
This role is a unique opportunity to take the lead in designing and implementing governance and risk strategies that drive real impact. As the Governance and Risk Coordinator, you’ll provide high-level advice on legislative requirements and best practices, enabling the Shire to maintain compliance and deliver exceptional outcomes for our community.
Your work will involve managing key governance systems, such as delegations and local laws, and overseeing Council’s compliance processes. You’ll play a critical role in supporting open and transparent decision-making by coordinating Council agendas, minutes, and public notifications. In addition, you will guide elected members through induction programs and ensure they meet their statutory obligations.
In the risk space, you’ll be at the forefront of cultivating a proactive risk culture. By implementing and monitoring our Risk Management Framework, you’ll help protect the Shire’s interests while driving continuous improvement across all departments. You’ll also coordinate key activities such as risk reviews, insurance claims management, and responses to audit recommendations.
Please note that this position is based in Derby with a base salary from $89,810 plus generous allowances (up to $15,104), superannuation (11.5% & up-to 7% Council matching), and 5 weeks annual leave. Housing may be available for the right candidate. Desired Skills and Experience
Understanding of the corporate policy cycle and its connection to broader Council strategies.
Experience in developing and improving governance processes and programs.
Well-developed written and verbal skills
Strong organisational skills with the ability to work within timeframes and meet deadlines.
Experience in undertaking and analysing reports and preparing complex written documents.
Demonstrated proficiency and experience in the use of a range of software applications (e.g., MS Office programs), with excellent computer skills and highly accurate data entry.
A qualification in any of the relevant field or appropriate training and experience (or significant progress towards).
