Job Description

Are you ready to lead with purpose and create a lasting impact on a thriving community? The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley invites you to join our team as Manager of Development Services, a role that offers a dynamic, fulfilling career in local government.

As a key member of our leadership team, you will oversee critical areas such as Town Planning, Building, Environmental Health, Aboriginal Environmental Health Services, Emergency Services, Waste Management, and Ranger Services. This is a unique opportunity to work across diverse portfolios, driving innovation and fostering collaboration to ensure the Shire’s goals are met.

In this role, you will lead with integrity and vision, inspiring your team to deliver high-quality services and embrace continuous improvement. Your strategic expertise will guide the development and implementation of policies and plans that shape our community's future. Building strong relationships with stakeholders, including Councillors, community members, and government agencies, will be essential in promoting effective governance and achieving shared goals.

This position is based in Derby and offers a competitive salary range from $130,000 to $150,000, plus:

  • Generous allowances (up to $23,855)
  • Housing
  • Vehicle for personal and work use across the West Kimberley
  • Superannuation (11.5% plus up to 7% Council matching)
  • 6 weeks annual leave

Desired Skills and Experience

 

  1. Bachelor of Arts (Urban and Regional Planning). Environmental Health, Emergency Management OR substantial progress towards relevant qualifications
  2. Experience in a senior management role, with a proven ability to lead, inspire and mentor staff to deliver individual and team outcomes, maintain service outcomes and improve productivity.
  3. A proven capacity to deal with complex community, development, economic and regulatory services issues including the formulation of appropriate action strategies and the provision of high level advice to the Executive team and Council.
  4. Strong analytical, problem solving, conflict resolution and mediation skills including public relations, community engagement, and public education; striving for mutually beneficial outcomes across a broad range of stakeholders.
  5. Excellent communication skills including the ability to prepare high quality written reports, policies, action plans, correspondence and other documentation as required.
  6. Highly proactive and self-motivated with a continuous improvement attitude and commitment to a high customer service ethos.
  7. Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills with the ability to work in partnership with senior leaders, managers and staff to implement organisational improvements.
